The Energy Consortium (Higher Education & Public Sector) – Non-Executive Chairman 2007-2011. This organisation, TEC, purchases energy on behalf of its members in both the HE and wider UK Public Sectors. (see - http://www.energyconsortium.org.uk) TEC also provides a number of parallel services, including assistance for institutions in achieving their Carbon Reduction Commitments – CRC’s . Surplus funds generated by TEC’s operations are retained and re-invested with its members in order to support work in researching sustainable methods and practices. I assisted TEC to transform its governance arrangements having become a Company Limited by Guarantee in 2007. I developed its internal procedural documentation spelling out in particular the roles and responsibilities of its Non-Exec Directors. In addition I embedded a new pay and reward structure within the organisation based upon formal role assessment and benchmarking.
FD Hall & Son Ltd (Building & Joinery Specialists) – Non-Executive Chairman 2009 to 2010. Through contacts made initially with family business advisors I worked with this small Building Contractor and Specialist Joinery Manufacturer in the role of Non-Exec Chairman. I guided the business during an unprecedented reduction in demand in Devon and Cornwall leading to the need to down size the business in a controlled manner. My work also involved the development of flexible monthly profit and cost models which allowed very quick analysis of the effects of reduced turnover on profitability and sustainability of the business. (see http://www.fdhall.co.uk)
I am currently working as a strategic advisor to Provelio Ltd, a Management Services Consultant operating in the property and construction sector. Most recently I helped the company to secure a commission with the Higher Education Funding Council for England, to research and write a Strategic Change Management Guide. I was involved in carrying out extensive sector research to inform the bid and most recently have been reviewing the final guide to ensure that the initial aims of the client have been fulfilled.
My work with family businesses was generated through strong links with the International Centre for Families in Business – ICFIB - who work with family owned and run businesses in order to help them through difficult transitions from one generation to another. My particular knowledge of the Property and Construction Industries has been put to good use with a number of small to medium sized businesses.

Detailed Profile
I started out as a Chartered Engineer and followed a very successful career within the commercial world with a large international petrochemical company – ICI. Since moving to the HE sector in 1989 I have tried to retain a disciplined approach to work whilst utilising my ability to work with creative individuals on issues and problems.
I was an active player in the Construction & Property sector in Bristol and was chosen as the first Chairman of the Bristol branch of the Construction Excellence (UK) programme. I continue to be involved in the construction industry and I am on occasion asked to speak at functions where building contracting and partnering methods are being debated.
In 1989 I joined the University of Bristol as Chief Engineer and in 1999 I attained the position of Bursar & Director of Estates and guided the University through a major masterplanning exercise which aimed to expand ,refurbish and consolidate the University’s Estate. I was responsible for the forward capital programme generated by the masterplan, totalling £250M. Bristol University achieved formal legal status for its masterplan within the legal framework of planning law in the UK. At the time Bristol was the first organisation of any kind to achieve SPD status in this new framework.
I left the University in 2007 to pursue my career in new directions and I now operate as a freelance and independent Management Consultant.
I also offer services as a Non Executive Director and have most recently been Chair of two organisations.
