Analytical Trouble Shooting – using confidence limits.
It is a well understood phenomenon that, when faced with an unusually difficult problem that requires a diagnosis, the untrained person is likely to come up with possible causes first, and then try to find the evidence that fits their own pet theory.
Time can therefore be wasted in trying to find evidence that does not, in the end, lead to the identification of the root cause. Worse still, the problem can go unresolved, despite attempts at remedy, and many thousands, and sometimes millions of pounds/euros/dollars can be lost.
The use of evidence based problem solving methods is not new, many organisations will offer training sessions on this topic. When tackling the most complex of problems, within complex systems, it is vital that such a process is used, despite its forensic approach and the time investment needed to carry it out.
I have taken some of the standard approaches to Analytical Trouble Shooting and have developed a confidence limit approach to analysing the data. Stated simply this just means assessing how good the data is that is being used to diagnose the problem.
The data collected is entered into a database, along with confidence limits. Then when considering the possible causes of the problem it is then very easy to mathematically derive a confidence level in the solution ideas. This takes away the subjectivity of the process and allows an objective view of the data so that the solutions can be properly tested before assuming that the root cause has been found.
I offer a training session for your staff team, based upon a problem that you have, and in the course of up to a full day possible causes, and solutions, will be generated analytically.
At the end of the session you will not only understand much better how to go about problem solving for any type of problem, you will also be given the data framework in the form of a spreadsheet that will allow you to continue to develop and refine your data on the problem.
